Recycling to end for
Moffat CAN
We would like to thank all residents who have supported our domestic recycling collections. It is with regret that we are now stopping all domestic collections the w/c 25th February 2013.
D & G Council will be starting their own 5-bin collections, and have met with us and confirmed that they will not be sub-contracting to us for Upper Annandale, as it is 'too complicated'.
In the meantime the Council had promised a letter of support for a low-carbon electric vehicle to tide us over until they start collecting, as our (well) used vans have both been off the road for repair recently, but did not send this on time for the grant panel meeting, despite reminding. Eventually they sent it - late - after we had already told of our intention to stop collections.
The good news is, we have already bought and started running the local milkround, currently selling milk, orange juice and eggs and from Easter selling fresh produce from the CAN garden and aquaponicum and from Andrea at Scott's the greengrocer's. We will have a Spring Easter launch of all our new services: a community carclub offering very cheap low-carbon transport for the community and creating a new part-time post; PAT (electrical) testing; gardening services and waste collection. The food waste collections (now pay-for) and furniture uplift service will continue. More details of these new services to come very soon. To keep fully up dated, please like us on facebook.
We look forward to your continued support as we move into our new phase.

BIG Lottery funding for Moffat CAN!
Moffat CAN has just announced funding from the Big Lottery that will allow CAN to provide work experience and training for those struggling to find work - 22 people each year for 3 years. Several permanent positions will also be created throughout the project. We have always had people at the heart of what we do, now we can really make a difference and provide much needed support in the coming years. The project will swing into action in August - watch this space!
Now Open!
Moffat CAN expands to Annan with a furniture and household goods re-use & repair service, funded by the Enterprise Growth Fund and LEADER.
The shop offers good quality, affordable, secondhand furniture, and free household uplift of good quality, re-usable household goods across Annandale. The shop is based in a large unit at the Silverlaw Industrial Estate off Prestonfield Rd the Annan Fire Station, and is open from 10-5pm Monday to Friday and 10-1pm Saturday. Come along and see what we're all about!
If you wish to donate furniture, white goods, other household goods, garden or office furniture - providing it's in good condition - please phone Annan CAN on 01461 203281. House clearance and small moving service also available. Repairs may be possible on certain items, please call to discuss. For more info and news click here
New funding for CAN:
Moffat Youth CAN!
Funding from the new Scottish Junior Climate Challenge Fund means we can work closely with Moffat Academy and Moffat Uniformed Groups on projects that will reduce their carbon footprints. We're thrilled with the news and really looking forward to working with our young people in the coming months. Click here for the Moffat Youth CAN page
CAN Community CAR CLUB!
Moffat CAN is hoping to create a Community Car Club for Moffat. The scheme would mean that people could use a car on a Pay as you Go scheme, so you could have access to a car without paying the full running costs of owning your own car (about £3500 per year). The project would be in partnership with Car Plus, who are funded by the Scottish Government. Such projects have been shown to be very successful in other parts of the country and we really feel that having access to a car in this way would be of great benefit to those living in a rural area like ours. We are currently working on a business plan and the application for the project, so watch this space for news. If successful, more funding would be applied for to extent the scheme to nearby towns.

New Project - Food Waste Collections
The average Scottish home wastes £430 of food every year!
Moffat CAN has just started a food waste collection service in Moffat. Food Waste forms a large part of the rubbish we throw away. Here at Moffat CAN we put it to good use. We have a 'Rocket In-Vessel Composter' which takes all the food and helps us make it into beautiful rich compost in just a few weeks. The composter can even take cooked food, meat and small bones.
We supply you with a kitchen caddy and your first supply of corn starch liners. You can then put your caddy out twice a week and will take the food waste away and recycle it for you. By doing twice weekly collection your food waste is not sitting around for too long. Collections are carried out by our newest employee Malcolm, on his customised trike.
